Luray High School student, Jamie Sponsler, decided that his community service act as a senior in Ms. Sarah Getz's Government class, would be to cut off 18 inches of his hair that he has let grow out for the past four years. Jamie's goal being that he would donate his hair to Children With Hair Loss, a non-profit organization that provides human hair replacements at No Cost to children and young adults who are facing medically-related hair loss.
The organization's campaign message is, "Covering Young Heads To Heal Young Hearts." When a child loses their hair to Cancer treatments, Alopecia, Trichotillomania, Burns, etc. the effects are much deeper than just cosmetic. Children can suffer significant emotional distress, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and become socially withdrawn. With support from around the country, Children With Hair Loss has been able to gift over 650 hair replacements and Care Kits each year to children throughout the United States, and this year Jamie will be one of those people helping to make a child feel more "normal" and accepted.
If you, or someone you know is interested in contributing to the organization, whether it be a donation of hair or a monetary gift, visit their website https://childrenwithhairloss.org/ways-to-help/ to learn more and to see if you can help.
