Lindy Burns, LMS FACS teacher

In honor of CTE month (February), PCPS would like to highlight the CTE teachers throughout our division! In each highlight, you will learn about the courses they teach, their years of experience in and out of the classroom, what drew them to teaching and the cool projects their CTE classes are completing! To them, we say "thank you" for all that you do each day to bring Career and Technical Education alive for our students!

Years of Experience - 1st year of teaching

What drew you to teaching?

I have been "teaching and coaching" children since I was 14
years old. My mom was a teacher while I was in school and was a wonderful
example of how a loving, caring and compassionate teacher can be. I will be
honest, growing up I really did not want to be a teacher. I soon learned from
the example of my mom and the experience of joining her in the classroom that I
had a passion for helping others achieve their best! However, it wasnt until I
moved to Page County that I decided to become a "certified teacher".
I did teach at a private preschool for 10 years in Maryland prior to relocating
to Virginia in the summer of 2018.

What's your favorite thing about teaching?

My favorite thing about teaching has got to be the relationships you
form with the students. My hopes is that with each interaction I have, I can be
a friend to someone in need, a caring heart when someone is down and a
listening ear when they feel like no one else is listening. I also love showing
students something new and seeing the joy they get when they "get
it!"

What project(s) are you most proud of so far this year?

I just started my position in January so I have not had much time to do
many projects but I think my favorite project so far so far has been the My
Plate assessment. I asked the 6th graders to build a healthy meal on a paper
plate using pictures from magazines, printed or hand drawn. They had to label
the correct portion amounts and also attach a paragraph evaluating their own
eating habits.
